Besides the lackluster story mode, an often-repeated point of criticism was the absence of many of the series' stalwart characters such as Sophitia, Talim, Cassandra, Taki, and Seong Mi-na. No hopping, no holding items behind your kart, unneeded complexity of two characters per kart, and overall, it just felt much different than what made Mario Kart 64 so fun.
